The Super Bowl is here again, folks! And nothing unites the nation more than our shared love of Super Bowl party snacks. But with your energy bill so high this month, splurging on your favorite treats might feel extra naughty. Well, never fear! We’re taking a break from natural gas plan savings this week to deliver some energy-friendly, bill-busting snacks that don’t compromise on flavor. So, let us whet your appetite…

Crockpot Cheese Dip – The Energy Saver

Did you know, crockpots are the most energy efficient home cooking appliance? Make this guilt-free cheese-heavy dip by cubing 16oz of Velveeta Cheese into the pot, with one cup of milk – and then go nuts on flavoring. We’d recommend 2tsp paprika, a pinch of salt and pepper, the juice of one lime – and a bit of chilli powder if you’re looking for spice. Cook for one hour, give it a stir, and dig in with some tortilla chips.

Pizza Dip – Crockpot Delux

If you want to take things up a notch with crockpot dips, try this. Put 8 oz cream cheese, a cup of shredded mozzarella, ¾ cup grated Parmesan, 8oz pizza sauce and some Italian seasoning into the pot, and cook covered on high for an hour. Then layer over a little more mozzarella, your favourite pizza toppings, chopped basil, and continue cooking just until melted. Viola – carb-free pizza dip!

Super Bowl Party Guacamole

For a more classic vibe, mash up come avocados, add finely diced red onion and garlic, and a squeeze of lime for this lightning fast crowd pleaser.

Cheap and Cheerful – Puff Pastry Cheese Sticks

If you’re looking for low-energy of a different sort, try stocking up on pre-rolled puff pastry. Cut it into 1inch diameter strips, give them a little twist, grate over some parmesan, and throw in the oven for about ten minutes.

Nut Brittle – The Local Hero

OK, so it’s not peach season just yet… but how about showcasing some of Georgia’s other local produce with some easy-as-pie homemade peanut and pecan brittle? Heat 1 cup of caster sugar slowly in a pan, without stirring, until it caramelises. Then stir in ¾ cup of mixed peanuts and chopped pecans, spread over a lined baking tray, sprinkle over some sea salt and leave to cool.
